Why The Artist’s Way?

I am a creative work in progress. The progress depends in large part on my willingness to let the Creator work through me. Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, a 12-week process of creative recovery, has been an instrumental tool in helping me get out of my own way.

Twice in 2018 I went through The Artist’s Way process on my own. Both times I tuned into a wisdom deeper than my own. I got clearer about my needs and wants.  I explored my personal story and discovered personal healing. I experienced beautiful synchronicities as I trusted in something beyond my understanding. The Artist’s Way led me to leaps in my creative process. The first time I discovered a gift for creating Heart Portraits, intuitive paintings of hearts that give insights into people’s lives.  The second time I had my first art show of works I had created over several years.

Twice in 2019 and again in the early months of 2020, I leaned into The Artist’s Way as both participant and group facilitator. Each time the process has been rich and led to new discoveries, insights, and steps on the creative path. Each time I have deepened my self-understanding and expanded my creative practices. Journeying through The Artist’s Way with others has amplified the elements of play, depth, curiosity, and inspiration. I am ready to share The Artist’s Way with others again.

[The Artist’s Way] got me out of my negativity about my creativity. I have never had a class like this. Opened my world.

How did all that happen? What does the process look like?

The Artist’s Way process has two foundational practices: morning pages and artist dates.

Writing morning pages is a practice of writing three pages each morning- not writing for anyone else to read, not writing to create something “good” or even creative, but simply a morning brain dump, an emptying out before the day begins.

Artist dates are a weekly practice meant to awaken a sense of play, joy, inspiration, expression. They might include visiting an art museum or gallery, taking a trip to the zoo, playing at a playground, going for a walk in the woods, going for a drive without a particular destination in mind- something that expands wonder and curiosity.

Besides morning pages and artist dates, each week of The Artist’s Way also includes other activities to explore oneself, one’s life, one’s fear and blocking beliefs, one’s joys and sense of play. Each week includes new activities; it’s ok not to complete all of them during the “right” week or even by the end of the 12 weeks. By completing the basic practices and even some of the other activities, you will still make personal discoveries and creative leaps, particularly when engaging in the process alongside others.

I’ve done the process alone, and you certainly can, too, but the process is richer when done with a community of support.

This is why I’d like to invite you to journey with me through The Artist’s Way. If you are seeking to explore, refresh, or begin a life of creativity, this is for you.

Many subtle changes and new practices were introduced that have changed me seemingly permanently. The bi-weekly gatherings were great. Because the process feels individualized and personal, it’s nice to come together for sharing, comparing, and gathering support as needed.

Details and Dates

2025 Dates have not been released. The process includes an opening and closing retreat on Saturdays. The facilitated process will include:

  • 8 (eight) facilitated in-person gatherings totalling 24 hours of facilitated time together

  • Weekly emails with reminders, reflections, and suggestions for supplemental materials

  • A private Facebook group to share inspiration, joys, struggles, and discoveries

We will seek to create a community of support where we listen and don’t judge, where we are open to creativity without trying to control it in ourselves or others. As facilitator, I will guide the process and encourage each person to share their insights and wisdom. I incorporate my training in Compassionate Communication into the way I guide the group. I honor that we are all students of the process and teachers to each other.

Each group is limited to 12 participants.

I found the mix of large & small-group dialogue, play & structure, activity & processing to be wonderfully well-balanced!

I had no idea that this was so much an interior journey. Very helpful! I have grown through this. I have gotten unstuck.
