Who Do We Choose To Be? Book Study

Who Do We Choose To Be? Book Study

Who Do We Choose To Be? by Margaret Wheatley begins with these words:

In a world we cannot recognize, how do we find a way forward? In this world we do not understand, how do we know what to do? When so little is comprehensible, what is meaningful work? What is genuine contribution?

The second edition of the book (published in 2023) is described this way: How do we see clearly so that we can act wisely? Wheatley brings present reality into clear and troubling focus using multiple lenses of Western and Indigenous sciences, and the historic patterns of collapse in complex civilizations. With gentle but insistent guidance to face reality, she offers us the path and practices to be sane leaders who know how to evoke people's inherent generosity, creativity, and kindness.

Let’s explore these important themes together!

Each session will include a short summary of salient points and plenty of time for discussion.

This 4-session book study is offered in person at the St. Catherine- 729 E. St. Catherine St., 40203. Sessions are on Saturdays, 10:30am-12:00pm, September 7-28.

The standard contribution for this book study is $75. The Pay It Forward contribution, which supports the scholarship level, is $105. If you have limited resources, choose the Scholarship contribution of $45.

The Artist's Way Fall 2024

I am a creative work in progress. Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, a 12-week process of creative recovery, has been an instrumental tool in helping me get out of my own way. I've gone through the process multiple times by myself and accompanied groups through it, the last time being in early 2020.

Each time the process has been rich and led to new discoveries, insights, and steps on the creative path. Each time I have deepened my self-understanding and expanded my creative practices. Journeying through The Artist’s Way with others has amplified the elements of play, depth, curiosity, and inspiration. I am ready to share The Artist’s Way with others again.

If you are looking for a reset...

If you are wanting to connect with play and wonder...

If you are longing for deep connections with yourself and others...

Join me starting in August as we explore The Artist's Way.

Early Bird rate available through July 31!

Rest and Remember Retreat

From co-creators Cory Lockhart and Dawn Dones:

Last year we offered our first retreat collaboration, an opportunity that encouraged intentional listening, rest, creativity, and re-membering, where Dawn offered her gift of creating space for deep restoration and Cory brought her artistic gifts and invited participants to experiment with theirs! The first Rest and Remember retreat was so beautiful that we are delighted to be offering it again!

Rest and Remember is the invitation to slow down and savor every aspect of life, to bring the wholeness of yourself on retreat for three days and two nights on the sacred grounds of the Loretto Community in Nerinx, Kentucky (a little more than an hour from Louisville).

Here are the details:

Rest and Remember is from Thursday, April 18th at 6:30 pm through Saturday, April 20th at 2:00 pm at Knobs Haven and includes:

  • Five gentle yoga practices

  • A guided process of creating your own art piece to remember the wisdom that lives in you

  • Intentional walks

  • Community-building

  • Time for personal reflection

  • and more

The meals included are dinner Friday; breakfast, lunch, and dinner Saturday; breakfast and lunch Sunday. All meals will be vegetarian and delicious.

We value this experience at $548 ($580.88 including tax). However, we offer it free in the spirit of gift and invite you to consider what you are able to pay. If you cannot offer the suggested amount, please offer an amount that is meaningful to you. If you can offer more than the full amount in order to support another participant and this work, we are likewise grateful.  Please add 6% sales tax to the total that you are able to offer as Kentucky is now requiring sales tax to be paid on retreats.

There are 10 spaces available.

If you want us to hold a spot for you, please fill out this Google form.  We request that you pay at least half of your registration now and the balance at the time of the retreat (payment details are in the form). If you’d like to pay through more than 2 payments, let us know and we can work that out.

We look forward to sharing Rest and Remember with you!

Creating Conversations that Connect: Tools for Difficult Conversations

Many of us deeply feel the divisiveness of our time. We long to have bridge-building conversations and yet when we try, we often end up frustrated, angry, dismayed. We want to be true to our values and to have fruitful conversations; sometimes it feels impossible to do both.

What are ways to maintain connection so that both parties have a chance to speak honestly and be heard?

How do we move from “us” and “them” to a greater sense of shared vision?

How do we cultivate win-win conversations?

This 2-hour training introduces a framework to express yourself with clarity, authenticity and understanding during challenging conversations- at home, in the workplace, or anywhere else.

The training includes:

  • An outline of the framework

  • Introduction of strategies

  • Modeling of the practices

  • Discussion

These strategies open possibilities for win-win outcomes. The training is perfect for individuals wanting tools to connect across divides, whether personal or ideological; teams wanting a common framework for communication; and anyone else wanting to cultivate greater connection in conversations.

This workshop is offered by the Nazareth Retreat Center and registration is through the Nazareth website. Cost of the training is $40. Some scholarships available.

You and your partner love each other.

Even so, there are times when one or both of you don't show up in the way you'd like to when you’re communicating. You may find yourself falling back into patterns from your family of origin or speaking in ways that at one time served you, but no longer do.

Compassionate Communication offers skills and tools to cultivate connection and care for yourself and your partner, even when you are experiencing conflict.

In this 2-hour introductory workshop you will:

  • practice using the tools with guidance and support

Responding to the Violence in the Middle East: A Gathering to Hold Each Other

  • The Justice Center at All Peoples UU (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Many of us have strong feelings and reactions to the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israelis and the ongoing Israeli attacks on Palestinians. We may have friends and family in the area that heighten these emotions.  We may have questions we don’t know how or where to ask and emotions (our own and others’) we don’t know how to hold with care.

On Sunday, November 12, we invite you to gather with Rus Funk and Cory Lockhart to intentionally create a space where we “hold each other” mindfully and with care as we express our emotions, questions, and concerns. This gathering is meant to be an intentionally brave space where people can share their experiences and responses to the violence.*

This is a free in-person event (donations accepted, not expected). Registration is required so that facilitators can plan appropriately.

*NOTE: This is not meant to be a debate, a “Question and Answer” session, or a place where anyone is expected to choose sides.

Trauma-informed facilitators Rus Funk, the Director of the Justice Center, and Cory Lockhart, a Nonviolent Communication trainer, bring their experiences in Israel and Palestine to open space for community-building conversations.

Keys to Heaven Retreat

  • 515 Nerinx Road Loretto, KY, 40037 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

From co-creators Mandy Olivam and Cory Lockhart:

Knowing the ease and joy of working with one another, we have long dreamed of co-creating and leading a retreat - and we’re finally doing it!

When we met to imagine its structure, we used an oracle deck that has often accompanied our collaborative work. Two cards that presented themselves were Key and Heaven.

“Is it presumptuous to call our retreat ‘Keys to Heaven’?” we wondered.

Then we remembered: the keys to heaven are within us, even if we sometimes struggle to access them. When we slow down enough to give our attention to the tastes, sights, sounds, and feelings of the present, we can experience heaven. Sharing these delights with others expands the possibilities of earthly-heavenly experiences!

And so, we invite you to join us for our

Keys to Heaven retreat.

Keys to Heaven is the invitation to

How to Have Antiracist Conversations Book Study

The back cover of Dr. Roxy Manning’s new book, How to Have Antiracist Conversations, begins with these words:

With both fierceness and compassion, you can directly challenge racist speech or actions without seeking to shame the other person.

Dr. Manning’s book is based on decades of service experience in her work interrupting explicitly and implicitly oppressive attitudes and cultural norms across the U.S. and internationally with individuals and groups committed to social justice. In this 4-week online study you will read the entire book, learning the whys and hows of these skills. Cory Lockhart brings to the facilitation and discussion her experience studying with Dr. Manning at intensive trainings and in classes, as well as her years of facilitating workshops on tools for difficult conversations and other Compassionate Communication skills.

Sessions will include presentation, discussion, and opportunities for practice.

This 4-session book study is offered via Zoom. Sessions are October 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 7:00-8:30pm ET. All sessions will be recorded for participants.

In order to continue integration in a supported setting, you’ll also have the option to add 2 additional practice sessions on November 9 and 16. You may add these at the time of registration or later.

The standard contribution for this book study is $75. The Pay It Forward contribution, which supports the scholarship level, is $105. If you have limited resources, choose the Scholarship contribution of $45. To participate in the November practice sessions, the additional cost is $22/$37/$52.

Want more information and guidance on choosing a contribution level? Visit the Considering Money and Contribution page.

If you’d like to pay in installments or to pay offine, please contact Cory before registering. If even the scholarship level is prohibitive, please also reach out. The goal is for this work and the supported conversation and practice to be accessible.
